Saving With Ultra-Low-Flush
Toilets
About 75% of the water used in home is in the bathroom. Toilet
flushing alone accounts for 40% of household indoor water use.
Ultra-low-flush (ULF) toilets use only 6 liters per flush, compared
to 16 to 20 liters for a conventional toilet. This means that
just by changing old toilet for a new ULF model, you can reduce
your water use by 25%.
Some people find it difficult to believe that a toilet can operate
effectively on only 6 liters of water per flush. Others wonder
if ULF toilets look radically different from conventional ones.
There is no reason to shy away from ULF toilets. In the USA,
particularly in the southern states where water shortages are
common, ULF toilets are the standard and have been well proven.
There are currently more ULF toilets installed in the USA than
there are toilets in Canada! The Canadian Standards Association
(CSA) has developed its own tests for ULF toilets. These toilets
must work just as well as conventional toilets, or they will not
receive CSA approval.
Most 6-liter toilets look very similar to regular toilets. Of
course there are newer, more modern designs available too, just
as there are in conventional toilet lines.
